S-Class Technical Feature Highlights

• OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) Screen (standard): In the S-Class, the OLED display is located behind a glass facing, and in combination with the actuators and pressure sensors behind it, provides a comprehensive control and display experience. Evaluation of the pressure exerted and haptic confirmation of touch commands makes extended functionalities possible. Furthermore, OLED panels emit light when subjected to an electric current, and do not require external background lighting, so power is only consumed where pixels light up, ensuring a better black level and even stronger contrast. When showing typical video sequences, OLED technology has up to 30 percent lower energy consumption than LCD technology.
• Burmester® High-End 4D Surround Sound System (available): This unique 4D experience uses speaker-like resonators featuring sound massage with surround speakers integrated into the seats, and clear voice reproduction. The system is equipped with 30 high-end speakers, all with their own amplifier channel with digital and analogue filters producing a total output of up to 1,750 watts, including an amplifier with an output of 400 watts for the subwoofer bass speaker in the trunk. The 4D experience includes a sound personalization function for sound reproduction, VIP seat function to optimize the sound for individual seats along with multichannel audio formats and five different sound profiles including: Pure, Live, Easy Listening, Surround and 3D-Sound.
• Rear-Axle Steering (available): With available rear-axle steering, the S-Class is as maneuverable as a compact car. The steering angle at the rear axle is up to 4.5 or 10 degrees, allowing impressive maneuverability and agility on narrow city streets. At the same time the handling benefits from a virtual extension of the wheelbase at higher speeds:
• With all-wheel steering and the 10-degree steering angle at the rear, the turning radius of the S- Class is reduced by up to 7 feet. This gives the long-wheelbase S-Class a turning circle of less than 36 feet.
• This extraordinary maneuverability and agility is also achieved by combining the rear-axle steering with a more direct front-axle steering ratio.
• Integrated actuation of the steering and brakes makes handling even more precise and stable in dynamic situations.
• 48-Volt on-board electrical system technology with EQ Boost (standard): The engines found in the S 500 4MATIC and S 580 4MATIC are supplemented with a powerful and efficient Integrated Starter Generator. This integrated electric motor system, known as EQ Boost, assists the combustion engine by adding up to 21 hp for short periods of time. EQ Boost also assists when accelerating, making driving without the combustion engine turned on possible ("sailing") and supplies the battery with power by means of high-efficiency recuperation. By doing so, it makes fuel savings possible that were previously the exclusive domain of high-voltage hybrid technology.
• Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX; standard): A revolutionary multimedia system featuring innovative technology based on Artificial Intelligence and an intuitive operating system. MBUX is pioneering a new level of in-car experience. The system can be operated by a new generation of Voice Control, the center touchscreen, and/or by the Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel. The system has learning capabilities and intelligent Voice Control with Natural Language Understanding and a verbal cue of "Hey Mercedes."
• Augmented Video for Navigation (standard): When the navigation function is active, a video image of the surroundings is enhanced with arrows or house numbers automatically superimposed directly onto the image in the media display.
• Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR-HUD; available): Augmented Reality for Head-Up Display further supplements MBUX and Augmented Video for Navigation with driver assistance systems and navigation information by generating and projecting images in the Head-Up Display, directly in the driver's field of vision.
• 3D Instrument Cluster (available): Three-dimensional warnings and functions of the driver assistance systems are immediately noticeable with striking 3D and shaded effects, such as 3D images of cars, trucks, buses or motorcycles surrounding the vehicle.
• ENERGIZING Comfort (available): enhanced health and wellness system boosts drivers' attentiveness and well-being while reducing sleepiness and stress through available programs that intelligently combine comfort and vehicle functions such as climate control and lighting.
• Driver Assistance Systems (all systems standard): The S-Class is standard-equipped with the latest driver assistance technology including intelligent hands-off detection. The Driver Assistance Package includes:
• Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® is an adaptive cruise control system that is able to automatically adjust your set speed for traffic ahead.
• with Route-Based Speed Adaptation: the vehicle is able to reduce the speed in anticipatory mode by referencing map data ahead of curves, junctions, roundabouts, toll booths and exit roads.
• Active Stop-and-Go Assist is able to keep the vehicle within the lane and maintain a safe distance with a high level of availability at speeds up to 35 mph. With the extended restart function, the vehicle can restart automatically up to one minute after coming to a stop.
• Active Steering Assist generates steering torque which helps the driver to stay in the center of the lane on straight roads and slight bends, taking its guidance from vehicles ahead and lane markings
• with Active Emergency Stop Assist: brakes the vehicle to a stop in a controlled manner when the system recognizes that the driver is distracted for a longer period or cannot intervene.
• and Active Lane Change Assist: assists the driver in a convenient and cooperative manner when making lane changes.
• Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function is able to help the driver avoid impending collisions with vehicles ahead, or when turning across the oncoming lane, the system will also assist with stationary or crossing vehicles and pedestrians, if the driver fails to take action quickly enough.
• Turn-off function of Active Brake Assist: activation of Active Brake Assist with Cross- Traffic Assist when turning across the opposite lane. If there is a risk of collision when turning across the path of oncoming vehicles, the vehicle will be braked when traveling at low speeds.
• Active Speed Limit Assist with Traffic Sign Assist utilizes map data and information from Traffic Sign Assist to automatically adapt the vehicle's speed.
• Active Blind Spot Assist is able to provide the driver with a visual alert, plus an audible alarm when a turn indicator is activated, to warn the driver if another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area. It can also help avoid a collision by single-sided braking if a lane change is still attempted with an obstacle in the blind spot.
• with Exit Warning: offers enhanced protection when getting out of the car, a visual warning for passengers displayed in the exterior mirror if a car or bicycle is driving past the vehicle. If the driver tries to open the door, an additional audible warning sound and ambient door lighting will start to flash red.
• Active Lane Keeping Assist is able to warn the driver by means of vibrations of the steering wheel when the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane. If the vehicle passes over a solid line, or a dashed line when opposing traffic is detected, this system can pull the vehicle back into its lane by applying the brakes on one side.
• Car-to-X Communication is a system in which the vehicle simultaneously acts as a receiver and transmitter, conveying warning messages and evaluating driving conditions, effectively allowing the driver to "see" much further down the road.
• Active Parking Assist with PARTRONIC and 360° camera make it possible to enter and leave parallel and end-on parking spaces automatically.
• PRE-SAFE® PLUS with PRE-SAFE® Sound activates the PRE-SAFE safety measures when a collision from behind is imminent as well as applying the brakes when the vehicle is at a standstill in order to prevent subsequent accidents. PRE-SAFE® Sound emits a short interference signal if an imminent collision is detected, triggering a protective reflex in the human ear referred to as the "stapedius reflex," which can help reduce hearing loss in the event of an accident.
• PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side preventatively moves the driver or front passenger up to 2.75-inches away from the impact zone to the side by rapidly inflating the seat's side bolster, reducing the load on the occupant during an accident if a lateral collision is detected by the system.
• Rear Passenger Airbag (available): Cylindrical, tubular structures are inflated with compressed gas and deploy a wing-shaped structure. A large, tent-like airbag deploys between the two wings, and this is inflated by the surrounding air via specially patented valves in the skin. This takes place with comparatively low force and a low risk of injury, as the tubular wings give way to obstacles. The airbag enhances the restraining effect of the belt system, and can support the head and neck to decrease the loads on them significantly.
• Toll Gate Transponder (standard): With a payment account set up via the Mercedes me Connect app, the built-in toll gate transponder will work with all major toll roads in the U.S. and select airport parking structures.
• MAGIC VISION CONTROL (standard): This innovative and highly efficient windscreen wiper system ensures greater visibility and greater safety by adjusting the water quantity to the situation by taking into account the ambient temperature, vehicle speed and other factors to spray washer fluid directly onto the windscreen in front of the wiper blades, precisely where it is required.
