E-Class Technical Highlights

  • With the optional Driver Assistance Package, the active safety systems include:
  • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® is an adaptive Cruise Control system that is able to follow a vehicle in front at a pre-selected distance
  • Active Steering Assist provides steering input and can actively intervene even if road lines are unclear or non-existent at certain speeds; can now function in curves with a tighter radius
  • Active Emergency Stop Assist brakes the vehicle to a standstill in its lane if it detects that the driver is no longer actively driving the vehicle while driving
  • Active Lane Change Assist is a radar-and-camera-based system that aids the driver when changing lanes
  • Active Speed Limit Assist can adapt vehicle speed to identified speed limits and can now adjust preemptively when speed limits are going to change
  • Route-Based Speed Adaptation can reduce the vehicle's speed in anticipatory mode by referencing the COMAND map data ahead of bends, junctions, roundabouts, toll booths and exit roads
  • Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function is able to help the driver avoid impending collisions with vehicles ahead, stationary or crossing vehicles and pedestrians if the driver fails to take any action to defuse the dangerous situation
  • Evasive Steering Assist assists the driver by adding calculated steering torque to aid in steering wheel movement when a driver deliberately or instinctively performs an evasive maneuver around a pedestrian
  • Active Blind Spot Assist is able to provide the driver with a visual alert, plus an audible alarm when a turn indicator is actuated, to warn of a side collision with another vehicle, or even bicycles, for example. At higher speeds, one-sided, automatic braking can additionally be applied to help avoid a side collision.
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist is able to warn the driver by means of vibrations of the steering wheel when the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane. If the vehicle passes over a solid line, this system can pull the vehicle back into lane by applying the brakes on one side.
  • PRE-SAFE® Sound: omits a short interference signal if an imminent collision is detected, triggering a protective reflex in the human ear referred to as the "stapedius reflex," which can help reduce hearing loss in the event of an accident
  • Car-to-X communication: the world's first fully-integral Car-to-X solution going into series production; the E-Class simultaneously acts as a receiver and transmitter, conveying warning messages and evaluating driving conditions, effectively allowing the driver to "see around corners" and "through obstacles"
  • Touch Control Buttons: touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel for instrument cluster and infotainment system control, similar to a smart-phone interface, which respond to vertical and horizontal swiping movements

Model Positioning

  • The E-Class Wagon debuted in the 1970's and has one of the most affluent customer profiles of any vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. Top U.S. E-Class Wagon markets (including the current AMG E 63 model) are California, New York/New Jersey, Florida, and Massachusetts.
  • Like the E 63 S Sedan, the E 63 S Wagon offers a hand-crafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine with an output of up to 603 hp and the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive deliver outstanding driving dynamics. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds sets a new record in this class.
